About Artist - Catherine Litton

'I've been painting for as long as I can remember, varying amounts depending on what else I've had going on at the time. I am mainly 'self taught' however I don't think you can be 'taught' to paint in an abstract style, or necessarily that it would be helpful.

For me, my work is not about what I have painted, but rather, what happens while I paint, what happens if I don't paint. I listen to the paintings and allow the work to find it's own way. It's instinctive. The colours and the movement of the medium are the breath of life caught on canvas.

The paintings are untitled. Firstly because I never set out to paint 'something', I just want to paint. It seems dishonest to name it just because it ends up 'looking like something'. Secondly, I don't want to influence someone's view of the painting, in other words I make no attempt to tell them what they should be seeing, or how a painting should make them feel. What I find generally is that the painting changes, or rather appears to change daily. Things will appear, sometimes they will stay, sometimes not. People tend to have a very personal experience with the paintings, mostly they are viewed and understood on an individual and emotional level.

I am the artist but not the owner of the art. I can only liken it to being a parent bringing a child into the world. You don't own children, they come through you, and you give them their lives.

I hope you have enjoyed looking at my work.
